Russian consumers spend 600 billion rubles (19.49 billion U.S. dollars) of online shopping this year, a study showed on Tuesday, nearly 60 percent more in 2009 than disposable income and penetration Internet development.
Russia's online retail industry is expected to exceed 800 billion rubles in 2012, according to a survey conducted by Citibank and Google.
"The dynamic growth of the volume of expenditure of the Internet and online transactions are far higher than those of traditional offline retail purchases," the study authors said.
The study showed that Internet sales are growing despite the economic crisis that led the Russians to tighten their belts and forgo costly purchases.
The study is based on statistics of Internet purchases by customers of Citibank between January 2008 and September 2010 and search statistics from Google.
